Our stump grinding process

A stump grinder is a high-powered wheel of carbide teeth that chips the stump apart from the top down. We grind several inches below grade so the area can be sodded, seeded, or planted over without the old root crown interfering.

What happens to the grindings is your call. We can rake the chips back into the hole and crown the surface — most homeowners go this route since the material decomposes naturally over a season or two. We can also haul the chips elsewhere on the property to use as mulch around trees or on trails, or remove them entirely and backfill the hole with topsoil for an immediate finished look.

For very large or buried stumps where grinding isn't the right tool, we can also excavate the stump and root ball with heavy equipment.

What size stumps we handle

We routinely handle everything from 4-inch ornamental stumps to large pine, cottonwood, and willow stumps over 3 feet in diameter. There's no real upper limit — for the biggest jobs we'll either grind in stages or switch to excavation, whichever makes more sense for the site.

Single stumps are typically priced per stump based on diameter and access — most residential stumps fall between $100 and $250 each. Multi-stump jobs get volume discounts: clearing a yard full of old stumps is dramatically cheaper per stump than calling someone out for one.

Bundle pricing with land clearing or mulching

Most stump work happens alongside larger forestry mulching or land clearing projects — and that's by far the cheapest way to handle it. If you're already booking clearing, adding stump grinding to the same visit usually costs a fraction of what a separate trip would. Just mention it when we walk the property.
